MORPHOLOGICAL VARIATION IN NEW ZEALAND SAPROLEGNIACEAE 1. ACHLYA CAROLINIANA COKER AND A. FLAGELLATA COKER

Ruth F. Elliott

Plant Diseases Division, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Auckland

Abstract Morphological variation in 30 isolates of Achlya caroliniana Coker and 19 isolates assigned to A. flagellata Coker is described. Isolates of A. caroliniana agreed closely in their morphology with descriptions from elsewhere, but the group of isolates assigned to A. flagellata did not agree exactly with any described species; they are closest to A. flagellata and A. proliferoides Coker. It is suggested that the species A. proliferoides be included in the same species complex as A. flagellata.
