A NOTE ON THE EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE AND RELATIVE HUMIDITY ON THE GERMINATION OF CONIDIA OF A NEW ZEALAND ISOLATE OF DOTHISTROMA PINI HULBARY

J. E. Sheridan and Chea Chark Yen

Botany Department, Victoria University of Wellington

Abstract Conidia of a New Zealand isolate of Dothistroma pini Hulbary germinated at temperatures between 5° and 30°c with an optimum at 17°c. Liquid water was not essential for spore germination which occurred at humidities down to 96% R.H. This isolate was more closely related to D. pini var. keniensis than to the other two varieties of the fungus. However, further work is necessary before the varieties present in New Zealand can be determined with certainty.
