Abstract The rediscovery of the genus Simplicia T. Kirk, some 90 years after the original gathering is noted, and Petrie's specimen from Waikouaiti is designated the lectotype of S. laxa. Buchanan's species Poa unifiora is renamed S. buchananii and becomes the second species of the genus.
