Pleurosorus rutifolius (R.Br.) Fee (Aspleniaceae) in New Zealand

David R. Given

Botany Division, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research,Christchurch

Abstract Pleurosorus rutifolius (R. Br.) Fee has been known to occur in New Zealand since the middle of the nineteenth century, but remains one of the rarer members of the New Zealand flora. Although known from 34 documented sightings or herbarium records, representing approximately 20 distinct localities, it has been recorded since 1930 from only six localities. Comments are made on the taxonomic status of New Zealand specimens, and observations on the ecology of the species are presented and figured. The conservation status of the species is outlined; the chief danger to the fern is indiscriminate removal of plants by collectors.
