Abstract Four distinct vernation patterns occur in the genus Nothofagus, namely conduplicate, revolute, plicate, and plane. These characterise groups of species which are distinct on other morphological and on geographical grounds. The infrageneric taxonomy of the genus is discussed in the light of this new evidence.
