Abstract A new species of orchid,
Drymoanthus
flavus, is described and illustrated. It is a diploid species previously
confused with its probable tetraploid derivative,
D. adversus. Both
orchids are endemic to New Zealand and broadly similar to
D. minutus
from Australia and
D. minimus from New Caledonia.
D. flavus
occurs sparingly from the central North Island to Stewart Island but is
relatively common in the south-eastern South Island. It was probably once more
widespread, and may have been displaced from many areas by
D. adversus.
Alternatively, it may have more precise habitat requirements. It is considered
to be a relict and local species in need of further survey and monitoring. The
name
D. adversus is lectotypified.
