Abstract  The records of seven taxa recognisable as belonging to the genus Lentinellus in New Zealand are examined and their current status assessed. Two species, Lentinellus crawfordii G.Stev. and L. ursinus (Fr.) Kühner (syn. Lentinus novae-zelandiae Berk.) are accepted, and two, L. cremeus G.Stev. and Lentinus zelandicus Sacc. & Cub., are excluded. Lentinus hepatotrichus Berk. and L. hyracinus Kalchbr. are confirmed as synonyms of Lentinellus ursinus. Lentinellus hepatotrichus (Berk.) Reid is a superfluous name since its basionym is a synonym of L. ursinus (Fr.) Kühner. Both L. hepatotrichus sensu Reid and L. hyracinus sensu G.Stev. are shown to be synonyms of Lentinellus pulvinulus (Berk.) Pegler, which is recorded for the first time for New Zealand. A new species with conspicuous bristles on the stipe and chlamydospores on the pileus margin, L. marginatus, is proposed. All four accepted species are described in full.

Keywords  fungal taxonomy; New Zealand fungi; Hericiales; Lentinellaceae; Lentinellus; L. crawfordii; L. marginatus; L. pulvinulus; L. ursinus; new species; new and revised records
