Abstract Desmids from two unnamed tarns beside the Routeburn Track and from Peter's Pool, a young kettle-hole near Franz Josef Glacier, included Staurodesmus pachyrhynchus var. nothogeae Skuja (thereby confirming his proposed taxon), Staurastrum osvaldii Skuja var. brevibrachiatum var. nov., and S. pseudassurgens Mask. var. robustum var. nov. More specimens are needed to verify that a new variety of Cosmarium decedens (Reinsch) Racib., a new form of Euastrum binale (Turp.) Ehr., and reduced forms of E. verrucosum var. alpinum (Huber-Pest.) Krieg. were in the samples.

Keywords  Freshwater algae; Chlorophyta; Zygnemaphyceae; Desmidiaceae; Desmids; New Zealand; new taxa Cosmarium, Euastrum, Staurastrum, Staurodesmus
