Desmids (Chlorophyta) in a small tarn in central Canterbury, New Zealand

Abstract  A small tarn near the road between Hakatere and Lake Clearwater contained 40 taxa of desmids (13 genera, 27 species, 10 varieties, 3 formae). Cosmarium, Staurastrum, and Closterium were represented by 11, 9, and 5 taxa, respectively. Cosmarium crassipelle var. noduliferum f. laterale is described as new, and six taxa are new records for the New Zealand flora.
