Abstract Clematis petriei is reinstated at species rank, being distinguished from the widespread and variable
C. forsteri by a number of flower and achene characters. In
C. petriei the adaxial surface of the sepals and the achenes are glabrous, and the achenes are chestnut brown.
C. forsteri has hairy sepals and achenes, and the achenes are usually light to dark brown. A lectotype for
C. forsteri is selected from the J. E. Smith Herbarium, and lectotypes are selected for all names placed in synonymy of
C. forsteri. Patterns of leaf variation, with a strong geographic basis, are described and illustrated for
C. forsteri.
