Abstract  Generic relationships within the Hypopterygiaceae were examined by maximum parsimony and neighbor joining analyses of 22 cpDNA trnLUAA intron sequences of 13 species from all 7 genera and 11 nrDNA ITS2 sequences of 8 species from 5 genera. In the cpDNA trees, the branches of Lopidium, of Cyathophorum, and of Canalohypopterygium tamariscinum/Catharomnion ciliatum are supported by high bootstrap values. A separation of Cyathophorum and Dendrocyathophorum into subfamily Cyathophoroideae is not supported. All investigated Hypopterygium specimens (H. didictyon, H. discolor, H. flavolimbatum, and H. tamarisci) form one clade together with the New Zealand endemic Dendrohypopterygium filiculiforme, whereas the southern South American endemic Dendrohypopterygium arbuscula is separated from this clade. In ITS2 trees and combined trnL/ITS2 trees, high bootstrap support is achieved for the Hypopterygium clade, whereas D. arbuscula appears related to Dendrocyathophorum with moderate bootstrap support. As a consequence of the paraphyly of Dendrohypopterygium, a new genus, Arbusculohypopterygium gen. nov., is established to accommodate D. arbuscula.
