Abstract  The type species of Clypeostroma, C. spilomeum, was re-examined. It was found to be distinct from another Hebe leaf pathogen described from the subantarctic, C. hemisphaericum. C. spilomeum has ascomata with several pseudothecia covered by a common clypeus, fissitunicate asci, 2-celled ascospores with pale brown walls, and no paraphyses. Although clearly a bitunicate ascomycete, its relationship amongst these fungi remains uncertain. C. hemisphaericum probably belongs in a different genus, but more material is required before its position can be resolved.
