Key to the genera of Australian mosses

Key to the genera of Australian mosses by W. R. Buck, D. H. Vitt & W. M. Malcolm. Flora of Australia Supplementary Series Number 14. Australian Biological Resource Study, Canberra. 2002. 120 p. Spiralbound. ISBN 0-642-568197. Price AUD45.00 (includes surface mail; + 10% GST in Australia). Reviewed by J. Milne.

After numerous years of using a photocopied earlier version of what became known as the “Buck and Vitt” key, the long-awaited published version of the Key to the Genera of Australian Mosses is now available. Previous keys to Australian mosses have been few and far between and for specific areas of Australia. Bastow (1886) published the first “Illustrated Key to Genera of Australian Mosses” concentrating on Tasmanian genera; Scott & Stone (1976), although indicating the Australian distribution of species, concentrated on the mosses of south-eastern Australia and Catcheside (1980) on mosses of South Australia; therefore, this key which includes all the known genera for the whole of Australia is a timely publication.
