Abstract A new north-east Otago endemic, Gingidia
grisea, is described. G. grisea is segregated from G. montana
and is distinguished from that species by grey-green leaves with a dense
glaucous bloom on both surfaces, and by the secondary bracts which are broad-elliptic
and long-acuminate. G. montana has green leaves and the secondary
bracts are lanceolate and subacute to obtuse. G. grisea occurs on
base-rich igneous, schist, and sedimentary bluffs and rock outcrops between
Waikouaiti and Herbert. It has undergone substantial range contraction through
the loss of habitat to forestry and weed invasion and the conservation status
is assessed as Nationally Vulnerable.
