Abstract  A revision of Metzgeria in Africa is presented. Eight species of Metzgeria are recognised in Africa: M. consanguinea, M. crassipilis, M. furcata, M. leptoneura, M. madagassa, M. nudifrons, M. quadrifaria, and M. saxbyi. Nineteen new synonyms are proposed. Metzgeria albinea, M. allionii, M. epiphylla, M. corralensis, and M. rufula, all from the Neotropics, are excluded from Africa. The occurrence of M. violacea in Africa is doubtful. A key to all the species in the region is provided.

Keywords  Metzgeria; Africa; new synonyms; Marchantiophyta
