This issue carries the first in what is intended to be an annual series of invited review articles. The series is named for Dr Eric Godley, a former director of DSIR Botany Division (the forerunner of Landcare Research), who was instrumental in establishing New Zealand Journal of Botany. The subject matter of these articles will vary within botany in its broadest sense, but will have a Southern Hemisphere focus, in keeping with the geographical scope of the Journal.
Volume 41 (2003) comprised 749 pages, 53 research papers, and 4 book reviews, compared with 713 pages, 57 research papers, and 2 book reviews in 2002. All issues were published on time.
The majority of papers published in 2003 were in the categories of mycology and plant pathology (24%; 16% in 2002), biosystematics and biogeography (23%; 21%), short communications (11%; 10%), ecology (7%; 19%), and phycology (7%; 3%). The sources of papers were New Zealand crown research institutes (28%; 26% in 2002), New Zealand universities (30%; 30%), other New Zealand institutions and private individuals (11%; 14%), and overseas (30%; 30%). Countries represented by overseas authors were Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Russia, Switzerland, USA, and Wales.
The September issue in 2003 included five papers which had been presented at a symposium entitled "Biodiversity of Southern Hemisphere Fungi" at the 7th International Mycological Congress in Oslo, August 2002. The Journal welcomed this opportunity to present together a group of papers from an international meeting.
