Abstract Two vexing grasses, Festuca rubra
and Elymus scaber, are interpreted as species naturalised from
Europe and Australia, respectively. There is no evidence for
recognition of indigenous infraspecific taxa in F. rubra. The
binomial Elymus scaber replaces the name E. rectisetus
which had been in recent use here for agamospermous plants of eastern
Australian provenance. Elymus enysii, which has an unacceptable
placement in Elymus, is transferred to Australopyrum in
the new section Notopyrum.
Keywords New Zealand; grasses; Pooideae; Poeae;
Triticeae; Festuca; Australopyrum; Elymus;
Stenostachys; nomenclature; new section Notopyrum; new
combinations Australopyrum enysii, Elymus plurinervis
