Abstract Flowers of Teucridium parvifolium were examined in situ to investigate its breeding system, which was previously thought to be hermaphroditic. Gynodioecy was found in two of the six North Island populations investigated. There was a significant difference in the size of flowers from female and hermaphrodite plants at each site, but no difference in flower size within each gender among the sites. Female flowers have vestigial, non-functional anthers on short filaments positioned near the base of the corolla.
