Abstract Mortality responses of fifth instar
Epiphyas
postvittana Walker (lightbrown apple moth) larvae on apples to immersion in
solutions of: (1) 0.5-5% sodium bicarbonate at 20-45deg.C; and (2) 3% sodium
bicarbonate combined with 0.05-0.5% concentrations of various emulsifiers at
20deg.C were determined. A 60 min immersion in 5% sodium bicarbonate at 20deg.C
resulted in a maximum of c. 60% mortality. Up to 100% mortality was achieved by
increasing the immersion temperature to 45deg.C. However, enhanced mortality
was attributed to temperature rather than sodium bicarbonate. All of the
emulsifiers added to 3% sodium bicarbonate increased mortality. Some
emulsifiers provided moderate mortality on their own, but combination
treatments were consistently better than either of the separate component
treatments. The combination of 3% sodium bicarbonate and 0.05% sodium lauryl
sulphate at 20deg.C resulted in >=99% mortality and best demonstrated the
increase in mortality resulting from the addition of an emulsifier.
