Abstract The bivalve genus Grammatodon is described
from the Temaikan Stage (Middle Jurassic; Aalenian to Callovian) of South
Otago, New Zealand. It is represented by three new species of the subgenus
Indogrammatodon, and one described species of the subgenus
Cosmetodon. An overview of the stratigraphy and associated paleontology
is provided for the five principal locations where species of
Grammatodon have been collected. Paleobiogeography is discussed in
general terms. Interpretations based on taxonomic features are given for the
mode of life of the Indogrammatodon species.
