New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics abstracts

Foreword

This special issue of the New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics honours the career and geoscientific research contribution made by Associate Professor Peter Ballance, now retired from the Department of Geology, University of Auckland, and living in Nelson. Alongside his significant teaching and administration duties during his 38 years of university service, Peter’s extensive research and publication has made, and continues to make, a major contribution to our knowledge about many aspects of the geology of New Zealand, especially in the fields of sedimentary geology and regional Southwest Pacific basin analysis and tectonic reconstructions. My personal admiration of this effort, combined with the influence that Peter had on initiating my own teaching and research career, being his first PhD student, were the catalyst for me proposing this special issue.
