FEATURES OF THE BENTHIC ECOLOGY OF CHALKY AND PRESERVATION INLETS

D. G. McKnight

New Zealand Oceanographic Institute, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Wellington

Abstract The fauna from eight benthic samples in Chalky and Preservation Tniets is considered and four infaunal assemblages recognised. A comparison with the benthic ecology of Milford Sound shows considerable differences but varying sampling techniques preclude a detailed comparison. The echinoderms Psilaster acuminatus (Sladen), Ophiuroglypha irrorata (Lyman), Ophiacantha imago Lyman, and Brissopsis oldhami Alcock are recorded from Fiordland waters for the first time.
