Abstract All species of Jasus inhabit continental or island waters of the Southern Ocean. The are six species in the ] lalandii group which contains all but one of the known species of Jasus. Within the J. lalandii group two subgroups, each comprising three species, are recognised. Taxonomic variation is discussed and a key for identification presented. For efficient management, administrators should know the geographic limits of species on which fisheries are based.
