TAXONOMIC STATUS OF NEW ZEALAND POPULATIONS OF PLAXIPHORA AURATA (SPALOWSKY) (AMPHINEURA: MOPALIIDAE)

Ian Mannering

Edward Percival Marine Laboratory, University of Canterbury, Kaikoura, New Zealand

Abstract Shell measurements of samples of Plaxiphora aurata from Chile, Macquarie 'Island, Campbell Island, Antipodes Island, and Auckland Islands do not support the separation of the New Zealand populations as the subspecies Plaxiphora aurata campbelli (Filhol, 1880) from the South American form, which was previously believed to be more ovate.
