Abstract The sagartiid sea anemone Phellia aucklandica (Carlgren, 1924) is an abundant and common member of the fauna of the continental shelf of south-eastern New Zealand. Although not previously reported from the mainland of New Zealand, it was originally described from the Auckland Islands. A complete new description and diagnosis of the cnidom of the species is provided. This species occurs both subtidally and intertidally and reproduces asexually by pedal laceration.
