Decapoda of the Snares Islands, New Zealand

Graham D. Fenwick

Department of Zoology, University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand

Abstract Twelve species of decapods, including six new records (Nauticaris marionis, Alpheus socialis, Munida gregaria, Paguristes subpilosus, Pagurus norae, and Pagurus thompsoni), are reported from the Snares Islands. Habitat information and the known distribution are presented for each species. The Snares decapod fauna is depauperate, probably because extreme wave exposure has resulted in a low diversity of intertidal and shallow water habitats. Those species present indicate that the decapod fauna has affinities with those of both southern New Zealand (Forsterian Province) and the southern islands (Antipodean Province).
