Abstract Tarakihi Cheilodactylus macropterus eggs are 0.90-1.00 mm in diameter and have a single oil droplet of 0.18-0.23 mm diameter. Eggs in surface plankton samples indicated spawning areas near East Cape, Kaikoura, and Fiordland. Hatching took 70 h at 18.5-20°c. Observations on rate of ascent and age of eggs suggested spawning occurs in midwater at night.
