Abstract Quartz crystal thermometer measurements were made in December 1976 of the water temperature at various depths under relatively thin ice at the margin of the Ross Ice Shelf (78°03'S, 167°21'E) and under sea ice (77°52'S, 166°44'E). Records of very cold water obtained at the first of these sites are discussed.
