Abstract A single Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg), was discovered in Four Fathom Bay (41°09'30"S, 173°54'E), Pelorus Sound, in November 1977. This is believed to originate from natural settlement in Crail Bay (41°09'S, 173°59'E), an area used for the collection of mussel spat, and is the first to be reported from around the South Island of New Zealand. Subsequently, two other Pacific oysters were discovered in December 1978-in Kenepuru Sound (41°12'S, 173°53'40"E'), and at Matakoi Point (41C03'20"S, 173°43'30"E) in Croisilles Harbour.
