Spawning of the sprat, Sprattus antipodum (Hector), round the South Island of New Zealand

Abstract The distribution of eggs of the sprat, Sprattus antipodum (Hector), in the plankton of coastal waters round the South Island of New Zealand during winter and spring of 1973, 1974, and 1975 is described from the results of plankton, surveys with a high-speed sampler. The principal, spawning grounds were in the Canterbury Bight, with other spawning areas off the Otago coast and the West. Coast. The stock of sprats in the Canterbury Bight was estimated to be at least 60 000 t.
