Recent stratigraphy of sediments in Lake Rotorua

Fisheries Research Division, Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, P.O., Ngapuna, Rotorua, New Zealand

Abstract The amounts of ejecta from the Tarawera eruption of 1886 falling into Lake Rotorua and of the sedimentation since were measured in 28 cores from widely dispersed sites in Lake Rotorua. Approximate isopleths of recent sedimentation are plotted. The amount of sediment increases with water depth and the amount of ejecta decreases in a north-easterly direction across the lake. No evidence was found of any major change in sedimentation rate over the past 90 years.
