Abstract The contention that allophanic clays in Lake Rerewhakaaitu are a major influence in reducing the availability of phosphorus to plants is examined and discounted. Phosphate spikes added to lake water are removed from solution by biotic mechanisms rather than by clays.
Keywords Lake Rerewhakaaitu, Phosphate-phosphorus, Phosphorus removal, Mieroflora, Radioactive tracers.
