Abstract Six marine species of the dinoflagellate genus Ceratium are described from New Zealand coastal waters. Notes are given on the morphology of the New Zealand representatives of these species as seen in the scanning electron microscope, and comments are made on the range of variation which occurs within a given species in the New Zealand area.

Keywords Dinoflagellata; Ceratium; morphology; scanning electron microscopy.
