Abstract The amplitudes of the meridional tidal flow calculated from previously published relative tidal flow constituents are fitted linearly, by least squares, to the amplitudes evident from the trajectories of Cook Strait swimmers. The resulting absolute tidal speeds of the main tidal constituents M2, Si, and N2 are 1.1, 0.4, and 0.2 m.s"1, respectively.

Keywords Cook Strait; tidal currents; harmonic analysis; swimmers.
