Sexual phases in Bankia neztalia (Bivalvia: Teredinidae) from Wellington Harbour

J. L. McKoy*

Marine Laboratory, Department of Zoology, Victoria University of Wellington, Private Bag, Wellington, New Zealand

Abstract Sexual phases similar to those described for other teredinids are described for Bankia neztalia Turner & McKoy from Wellington Harbour. Examination of gonads of specimens collected during 1970-72 showed that B. neztalia is a protandrous hermaphrodite. Spawning times could not be determined on the basis of gonad stages alone.

Keywords Bankia neztalia; Teredinidae; sexual phases; protandric hermaphrodites; Wellington Harbour.
