Abstract Bromide levels in unconfined ground water in the area south-west of Christchurch increase gradually with distance from the source, the Waimakariri River. The concentration of bromide correlates well with chloride and nitrate concentrations, and no specific source of bromide pollution has been found.

Keywords bromide; chloride; nitrate; ground water; industrial wastes; farm wastes.
