Abstract Francis (1980) has argued against the adequacy of the assumptions which are the basis of the main mathematical models used in modern fisheries science. He states that because these models are also inadequate, fisheries scientists have failed to provide long-term successful management decisions. Francis's arguments up to that point are valid and quite acceptable, but when he goes on to assert that because of such failures modern scientific methodology is bankrupt, the argument becomes invalid and hence unacceptable; the assertion simply does not follow from his premises.
