Abstract Since the first edition of this handbook in 1971 enough progress has been made in secondary production studies to justify this revision. Only the late F. H. Rigler was a contributor to both publications and in agreeing to edit a new edition he gathered together a group of contributors who have brought new perspectives to the problems involved in assessing secondary productivity. This book thoroughly covers the current literature and the technical progress that has been made since the first edition, with a considerable improvement in the sequence in which the various aspects of calculating secondary production are treated.
