An alternative water circulation pattern for Hawke Bay, New Zealand

Abstract Surface circulation for Hawke Bay, New Zealand, has been described as consisting of 2 cells denned by an inflow along the midline of the bay and outflows at either end. Observations in February 1980 suggest a different, 3-cell, pattern with 2 parallel intrusions of oceanic water and 3 outflows. This description is offered in addition to, rather than in place of, previous ones. Bottom circulation was probably 2-cell. Indirect evidence suggests that the source of the surface inflows was to the south.
