Abstract The flushing time of the Upper Waitemata Harbour is calculated using a box model based on tidal excursion segmentation. The model coefficients quantifying intersegment solute exchanges are calibrated using salinity and dye data. The computed flushing time of 9 to 11 tidal cycles contrasts with 11 to 13 tidal cycles calculated by the freshwater fraction method and 4.5 tidal cycles calculated by the modified tidal prism method. Reasons for these differences are discussed.
