Abstract This long-awaited book is the only account of any algae to be published in the series Flora of New Zealand. It is the first of three volumes on desmids, a large and well denned group of freshwater green algae which are widespread in a variety of habitats in New Zealand. Attractive for their diverse shapes and mirror-image patterns, these microscopic plants are also important economically because some are sensitive to changes in water chemistry, and if identified correctly, can be used to monitor the quality of water.
