Abstract This is one of those volumes that publishes a group of papers having a common, or sometimes not so common, theme. Such volumes usually arise out of a symposium or conference but this set presents some of the results of a highly successful multi-institutional research project in America. The Cenozoic Paleoceanography Project (CENOP) was initiated in 1977 with the aim of generating paleo-ceanographic reconstructions of the Miocene ocean (24-5 million years ago) using stable isotopes and quantitative micropaleontological data.
