Abstract In spite of the fact that water covers a large proportion of the globe, aquatic microbiology has received scant attention compared with almost all other branches of microbiology. This situation is reflected in the relatively few publications on aquatic microbiology. Of these only a small number consider the organisms and the processes they mediate in unpolluted habitats; the majority deal with the effects of pollutants on the micro-organisms and their metabolism. It was therefore pleasing, several years ago, to read of the introduction of a new series, Advances in aquatic microbiology, which according to the prepublication information would present articles on aquatic micro-organisms and the processes in which they are involved — this would be of interest to biologists,
