Abstract Laboratory measurements of 14C fixation and of C2H2 reduction (nitrogenase activity for N2 fixation) were carried out on Lake Rotongaio samples (dominant organism: Anabaena sp.) to see whether the induced rate of change of photosynthesis and N2 fixation were within the magnitude of rates of change of water movements in the lake. Ancillary observations were made on the shifts with time of in vivo fluorescence and changes of 14C fixation with an enrichment of NH4-N nutrient. Incubation times were from 20 minutes to over 10 hours.
