Abstract Bill Ballantine is New Zealand's most ardent proponent of marine reserves. He has been associated with the development (or, as he repeatedly stresses in this book, the lack of development) of marine reserves in New Zealand for more than 20 years and has had a prominent role in raising public and political awareness in New Zealand of the potential utility of protected marine areas for the conservation and management of marine resources. "Marine reserves for New Zealand" brings together, as different chapters, a collection of papers and talks by Ballantine on the usefulness of marine reserves that were written at various times between 1977 and 1991.
