Abstract I was quite excited by the concept of this book; there is a very real need for popular coverage of some of the groups of small secretive fishes that are found in rock pools. Although previous popular books on New Zealand fishes have covered some of these species, exciting recent research has revealed many formerly unknown species and led to a much better understanding of these groups.
