Abstract The recent book by Behnke (1992: reviewed in New Zealand journal of marine and freshwater research 27: 382-384 this issue) provides the reference data to examine questions that relate to the origins and identity of New Zealand's "rainbow trout". These fish were introduced here from western North America during and since the late 1800s. Although there has been general acceptance that New Zealand has stocks of "rainbow trout" of an anadromous, steelhead derivation, and which probably had their origins in rivers that flow into San Francisco Bay (Scott et al. 1975), it may not be quite that simple.
