Abstract Several cats in Whangarei were poisoned on 4 January 1993 after consuming left-overs of their owners' shellfish meal: this heralded an outbreak of more than 180 reported human shellfish poisonings. As a result, on 21 January the entire New Zealand coastline was closed for shellfish harvesting, leading to a loss of export sales of up to 2 million New Zealand dollars per week. Fortunately, by 1 April most areas had been reopened, except for a few locations in the far north which have remained closed until present (October 1993).
