New Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research abstracts

Ann Chapman--inspirational limnologist

This special section is dedicated to Dr Margaret Ann Chapman, or Ann as she is known to all her many friends, following her retirement as Reader in Biological Sciences at Waikato University, New Zealand, after a long and influential career as a freshwater scientist and university teacher. Most of the papers in the section were presented at a conference held at Waikato University on 8 February 1997 as part of the celebrations to mark her retirement. The idea was to bring together a number of Ann's ex-research students and overseas colleagues with whom she has worked to present a series of papers that reflect her own wide interests in limnology. Many of the papers have Ann as a co-author, serving to emphasise not only her wide ranging interests and expertise in freshwater science but also that, even in retirement, she is still actively involved in research work. Ann is a perfect example of a true naturalist, perhaps more in the mould of C. Darwin or G. E. Hutchinson than the recent generation of professional scientists driven more by the need to attract research funding. Her involvement in freshwater biology and zoology has arisen out of a passionate interest in these subjects and as a result she has been an inspirational figure for all who have worked with her. For Ann, research is a way of life and doubtless she will never truly retire as a scientist.
