Letter to the Editor
Comment: American Fisheries Society makes changes in the end

Many aquatic biologists, and possibly some others, may know that the American Fisheries Society publishes a list of standardised scientific and common names for the fish of North America. The sixth edition of this list has recently been published (Nelson et al. 2004). Fisheries-related journals published in North America typically insist that authors use these standardised names, and this is likely to remain a requirement. Moreover, at times, journal editors have even attempted to impose North American common names for New Zealand fish species, when published in these American journals.
